Vale Residents warned about council tax scam
26 April 2017
RESIDENTS are being warned about scams purportedly offering a council tax refund – with the elderly a particular target.
A number of Vale pensioners have been called by two separate companies, who request payment in exchange for organising a reimbursement of council tax.
Both organisations are suspected to be fraudulent and residents are urged not to disclose bank account details or any other personal information if contacted by anyone offering such a service.
One company call themselves Shore Claims and the other Claims Solutions Brighton.
They ask for bank account information for a one-off payment, which it is claimed will allow them to process a Council tax refund.
This comes after similar incidents were reported last year.
Anyone who is contacted in this way is asked to notify the police and the Council, either by calling 01446 709564 or by emailing CouncilTax@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk
Guidance is also provided by Citizen’s Advice Consumer Service. Their phone number is 03454 040506.
A Council spokesperson said: “We have been concerned to hear reports of a number of residents being contacted by individuals offering a refund on council tax in exchange for a fee.
“We must stress that such an approach is completely fraudulent and under no circumstances should people disclose any personal information.”
