Ysgol y Deri to stage charity bike ride
20 April 2017
YSGOL y Deri is encouraging people to join, help marshal or sponsor participants of a charity bike ride it is organising next month.
The school, which caters for over 250 pupils with specialist needs between the ages of three and 19, has arranged for a group to cycle along the Taff Trail from Brecon to Penarth to raise money to help disabled people enjoy cycling.
Over the last three years, around £20,000 has been generated, allowing the school to buy specially-built bikes for wheelchair users, design a mountain bike sensory trail and take students on trips to world-renowned cycling routes in the Afan Valley.
The bespoke bikes are made to order and cater specifically for an individual child’s particular needs.
For this reason, they cost around £5,000 to £6,000 each and the first delivery of bikes is expected at the school early next month.
This year’s event takes place on Saturday, May 20, with riders given the option of joining the ride in Brecon, Merthyr or Nantgarw. They then travel along a fully signposted and marshalled route that finishes in Penarth.
There will be a bus leaving Ysgol y Deri at 7am and a party featuring a barbecue held at the finish line.
It costs £12.50 to enter, discounts are available for group entries and a prize awarded to every rider.
