A-level success across the Vale

Sixth form students across the Vale of Glamorgan have had their nervous wait for their A-Level results come to an end, with pupils yet again outperforming the national average.
Most notably this year’s results saw an increase in the number of outstanding pupils with 28.1% of Vale of Glamorgan WJEC A-Level students achieving the highest possible A* and A grades, a figure almost 5% above the Welsh average.
Secondary-school-pupilsOverall 97.9% of the Vale’s pupils achieved grades A*- E, compared to a Welsh average of 97.7%.
Barry Comprehensive School saw a significant improvement in pupil’s success in achieving the highest grades. 22% of learners achieved A*or A grades, up from only 7% in 2016. 77% of pupils at the school achieved A* - C grades, a significant increase on last year’s total of 53%. Overall 99% of pupils at the school achieved A* - E grades.
Pupils at Stanwell Comprehensive, Cowbridge Comprehensive and Ysgol Bro Morgannwg recorded 35%, 32% and 28% of grades at A* - A respectively.
At AS-Level the Vale maintained its strong overall performance from last year by matching the A – E pass rate of 89.7% while increasing the number of A grades from 21% to 21.7%.
At this level the county’s outstanding performer was Cowbridge Comprehensive School which saw more than a third of learners achieve A grades, an increase of 8% from last year, and 74% of pupils record A - C grades.
Meanwhile the greatest improvement seen was at Barry Comprehensive School where 36% of pupils received A – C grades, also an 8% increase from 2016, and 85% of all pupils achieved A - E grades, up by 22% from last summer.
Paula Ham, Vale of Glamorgan Council Director of Learning and Skills said: “There will be celebrations across the Vale today as sixth formers congratulate each other on their successes.
“For students receiving their A-Level results this is the culmination of years of hard work and they should be very proud of what they have achieved. While for those opening their AS results the finish line is now in sight.
“This year’s results cement the Vale of Glamorgan’s reputation for outstanding educational standards. Teachers and support staff work tirelessly all year to give our young people the strongest possible platform for success and they too fully deserve to celebrate today.”
