Half-term to bring sports tasters to young Vale girls

15 February 2017

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sports and Play Development team are to host a sports taster event over half term, with the aim of getting more girls active.

The session forms part of the Council’s ‘Girls on the Move’ campaign, which wishes to increase female participation in sport across the Vale of Glamorgan.

Aimed at girls in school year 5 and above, the taster session will be held at Llantwit Major Leisure Centre on Wednesday 22 February, between 10am – 12pm.

Places can be booked in advance, or you can turn up on the day. It is completely free-of-charge.

At the event, girls will be able to pick up a racket for badminton, throw some shapes at the street dance class, and bend it like Bale in the football, which has been increasingly in-demand.

The sessions will be informal, with all girls welcome to attend, regardless of their interest or ability.

The Council’s sports team will also be talking to those attending to find out what physical activities they would like to see in future events.

Past ‘Girls on the Move’ sessions have included ‘glowminton’ (glow in the dark badminton) at Barry Leisure Centre, and a girls running club in Penarth.

Girls in Vale comprehensive schools have also been having a go at fitness based activities, such as cheerleading, dance and swimming as part of the ‘Girls on the Move’. These projects have worked to engage with girls who are not currently part of community clubs, but still want to become more active.
