International netballer shows support at Vale school tournament

30 March 2017

One hundred and eighty primary school children from a number of Vale of Glamorgan schools competed in a tournament attended by international netballer Bethan Dyke.

Gwenfo Primary School 1stMiss Dyke started playing netball from the age of eight, and watched on from the side-lines at RAF St Athan as young pupils from 18 Vale primary schools competed for the right to attend the regional finals in Cardiff.

Nine volunteer umpires from local secondary schools helped out, and oversaw over 50 closely-contested matches between rival schools.

From the outset, six of the 18 teams competing would go on to compete in the regional finals on 30 March.

Gwenfo ran out as victors, with St David’s second, and Cogan finishing third. The other teams to make up the top six were Cadoxton, Bro Morgannwg, and Llangan.

The event was organised by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sport and Play Development team, with one Council Officer stating: “It was great to see so many schools, and children, involved with this event, and the range of abilities competing. All pupils put in a lot of effort, including the volunteer umpires.

“Congratulations to the top six, and good luck in the regional finals. Do the Vale proud!”
