Opening of new Port Road bus lane to improve key strategic route
17 March 2017
A new signalised junction with a dedicated bus lane for Port Road, Wenvoe, has been officially opened to the public.
Delivered through a joint partnership between Welsh Government, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Bellway Homes, the scheme aims to enhance cycle and pedestrian facilities along the northern section of Port Road, and encourage more people to walk and cycle along this corridor.
The new Port Road bus lane concludes the current works associated with the South Wales Metro at this key route, and, as Gareth Stevens, Commercial Manager of Cardiff Buses, says, “It is hoped that it will offer quicker journey times between Barry and Llantwit Major.”
Meanwhile, Kevyn Jones, Managing Director of New Adventure Travel, said: “The new bus lane and improved traffic signals will help us deliver a reliable service with consistent journey times that will meet passengers’ expectations.”
The construction work for the project was undertaken by Walters Construction and financed by Bellway Homes and the Welsh Government via their Metro programme.
Councillor Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Building Services, Highways and Transportation, said: “I am delighted with the improvements made at Wenvoe: the new signalised junction will not only offer improvements for those travelling by car, but will also provide for those cycling and walking.
“We have a continuing commitment to improving the transport network across the Vale of Glamorgan – evidenced by the recent completion of the £500,000 scheme to provide the new junction at Cross Common Road – and hope the new bus lane at Port Road will prove a significant gateway in the future.”
