Next generation of sports coaches at Ysgol Y Deri?

23 May 2017

Six pupils from Ysgol Y Deri completed an Active Young People (AYP) Sports Organisers course recently, equipping them with the skills to go on and lead their own sports sessions in the future.

Ysgol Y Deri coachesDelivered by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sport and Play Development team, the term-long course aimed to pass on valuable transferrable skills to be used in a sports-based environment.

The AYP course acts as the first step onto the coaching pathway, with participants able to learn how to construct session plans, organise warm ups and how to safely lead competitive team matches.

At the end of the course, each pupil had successfully run an element of a sports session, with this being followed by a period self-evaluation to highlight their strengths and the areas they could develop in the future.

It is hoped that the pupils can put these skills into practice during term time, as well as assist with the delivery of future Vale Holiday Schemes.

Simon Jones, Disability Sport Wales Development Officer, said: “The pupils at Ysgol Y Deri were brilliant to work with, and showed a genuine eagerness to help with the delivery of sport-based events both in and out of school time.

“I am confident that this group of coaches can continue on the coaching pathway, and become positive role models to the younger pupils at Ysgol Y Deri.”
