Vale employees out in force for Give & Gain Day
22 May 2017
Several employees across the Vale of Glamorgan Council recently provided 120 hours of volunteering, as they gave up a day to support local projects.
Friday 12 May saw the Council’s Neighbourhoods team joined by volunteers for three schemes, with members of Building Services contributing by deploying materials and labour throughout the day. The three sites for the work included:
St Peter’s Church in Dinas Powys
Stratford Green, Barry
Tenovus Distribution Centre, Cardiff
In Dinas Powys, the volunteers cleared a section of land, and created a fire pit, for the church and local guides to use whilst hosting events and fundraising activities, whilst Stratford Green, in Barry, was cleared of litter and fly-tipping.
Meanwhile, a skip amnesty day took place here, along with a furniture swap-shop for local residents, as new benches were installed on the green, and the grass cut back.
Further to this, the volunteers helped give the garage doors across the whole street a complete make-over, with a fresh coat of paint being applied to them.
Volunteers also made an appearance at Tenovus, a charity that provides emotional support and practical advice to those affected by cancer, and assisted with the processing of items into the centre, as well as preparing goods for distribution.
Miles Punter, Director of Environment & Housing Services for the Council, volunteered on the day, and said: “Give and Gain Day provides us with an opportunity to get out of the office, and provide a helping hand to our local communities.
“The camaraderie on the day was excellent, with all volunteers contributing to brighten up the areas in Dinas Powys and Barry. It is a really worthwhile cause, and I wish to thank all of those who joined me on the day.”
Give and Gain Day, organised by Business in the Community (BITC), is the UK’s only national day that celebrates the power and potential of employee volunteering. Volunteers give up a day in the normal day-to-day job to help local businesses and engage with the community.
