PYA Plant for Penarth
Members of Penarth Youth Action worked with Gwyrddio Penarth Greening to plant a fruit orchard at Wordsworth Park in Penarth on Wednesday 7th March.
Penarth Youth Action is a group of young people aged 11-18 supported by the Vale Youth Service to ensure the voices of young people in Penarth are heard by decision-makers. They want to make Penarth a better place for young people to live.
Penarth Youth Action had previously been involved in the upgrade of the play equipment at Wordsworth Park and after learning more about Gwyrddio Penarth Greening members jumped at the chance to help plant a fruit orchard at the far end of the park.
Along with volunteers from Gwyrddio Penarth Greening, members planted the following fruit trees: 6 Apple, 1 Ellisons Orange, 1 Grenadier, 1 Lanes Prince Albert, 1 Lord Lambourne, 1 James Grieve, 1 Lord Derby, 1 Damson (Shropshire Prune), 1 Cherry (Stella), 1 Pear (Conference),and 1 Plum (Victoria). All of which are traditional welsh varieties that would have grown in orchards hundreds of years ago.
The fruit orchard is for the local community to use. It will help promote community production and ownership of fruit, and help residents rediscover the pleasures of eating organic fruit grown close to home. The orchard will also create habitats for wildlife.
Penarth Youth Action and Gwyrddio Penarth Greening will monitor and preserve the fruit orchard but the Vale of Glamorgan Council Parks department will also support the maintenance of the area.
