Dressmaking Skills for Beginners
You’ll learn how to make an open and closed seam and sew curves and corners and sew edges and top-stitching. You will sew a simple dart, insert a concealed zip, attach a facing, make a hem and a button hole. You will also learn how to choose a commercial pattern, lay a pattern on fabric and cut out and mark, ready to sew. By the end of the day you will have gained enough skills to make a simple garment on your own.
You are encouraged to bring some basic sewing equipment such as scissors, needles, pins, tape measure, etc. There are sewing machines available, however please feel free to bring along your own.
All fabric, cotton and zips will be provided.
Meet the Tutor - Deborah DeLloyd
Deborah has a BA (hons) Fashion degree, which she gained from Southampton Institute of Higher Education in 1994. She went on to become a Costume and Dress Designer and Maker and gained over 15 years of experience in TV and theatre. She has a business called Cwtch Club where she makes bespoke, hand made softies from small and big kids' drawings, to order and leads workshops.
Deborah has worked as a costume maker for many respected companies including Welsh National Opera, the BBC, the Sherman theatre and HTV. She has a teaching qualification and has used her skills to lead workshops for children and adults, teaching various sewing and craft skills.
