The Vale of Glamorgan National Eisteddfod
4-11 August 2012
26 November 2012
After saying farewell to the Pink Pavilion and all the
visitors to the Eisteddfod, the Vale can always be truly proud of
the success of the festival, in spite of a few days of bad
weather.
In total, 138,767 people passed through the gates to enjoy the
competing, the activities and all the fun of the Maes.
Eisteddfod 2012 highlights
* The Crown was won by Gwyneth Lewis, the Daniel Owen Memorial
Prize by Robat Gruffudd and the Chair by Dylan Iorwerth. The winner
of the Drama Medal was Bedwyr Rees.
* The opening night concert, featuring the latest member of the
brand, Only Vale Kids Aloud, was a huge success, with tickets sold
out. Other evening successes were the premiere of Karl Jenkins' new
work with the Eisteddfod choir on the Saturday night, and the
first-ever Comedy Gala on the Tuesday. Several hundred people came
to laugh in spite of the downpours and the mud - a hardy crowd,
indeed.

* The Cardiff Blues and the Glamorgan Cricket Club first team
visited the Vale of Glamorgan Council's sports and play area
on the Maes to take part in training sessions with young
people. It was brilliant to see Chris Coleman and John Hartson
visit as well - VIPs from three of our favourite team sports.
* Activities in the Council Pavilion included cookery
demonstrations, face-painting, willow workshops and storytelling,
proved to be popular as well, and the stand was busy all week.
* To coincide with the arrival of the Eisteddfod, the Iolo trail, a new
walk was launched to celebrate Iolo Morganwg. Without the
influence of the Vale genius from Flemingston, the
Eisteddfod as we know it today would be very different. The Iolo
Trail is there to be enjoyed, so do give it a go if you like your
walks.
* Finally, thank you all for your support during the last
eighteen months. Whether it was on a committee, in
fundraising events, in volunteering as stewards and help personnel,
in attending the event and officiating in all capacities, formal
and informal, every contribution counted. It really would not
have succeeded as well as it did without you. Diolch o galon.
