Exercise Referral

rollerbladingWhat is it?

The Welsh Assembly Government is investing over £4 million over the next three years (2008 – 2011) to support, develop and evaluate exercise referral schemes in Wales.

The investment seeks to determine the effectiveness of a national exercise referral scheme to:

  • improve health
  • increase physical activity levels
  • look at cost effectiveness measures
  • support the development and standardisation of schemes across Wales which may otherwise have to stop (due to short term funding arrangements).

History

First year schemes started in July 2007, operating in Neath, Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff, Swansea, Bridgend and Conwy. After this a further eight areas were added by winter 2007 (including the Vale of Glamorgan) and the last eight areas will be added by winter 2008.

What are the benefits?

All schemes will be operating to nationally agreed standards. All exercise professionals are trained to a high level, meeting with the guidance issued by the Medical Defence Union.

If selected, you will receive the highest quality service. Protocols have been approved by the British Medical Council in Wales. You will also be contributing to an evaluation, which is of international importance. Anyone in Wales can access the scheme as long as they are aged 16 or over.
