Youth Room
Monday 21st January 2008
Saw the youth room officially open which has made use of the old
first floor health suite and has benefited from an £18,000
injection of cash - courtesy of the Safer Vale Partnership
fund.
Penarth Leisure Centre continues to work closely with partners
including Vale of Glamorgan Police and PACT, to ensure that safety
is observed in the community. Whilst the centre recently benefited
from installing CCTV cameras, unfortunately a few vandalism issues
remained in the community.
Nationally the voice of some young people echoed local views; in
general young people have “nowhere to go at night”. This results in
some young people gathering together in popular areas. The Youth
Room aims to help alleviate the problem around the Penarth area and
offers an imaginative space for young people to use and respect as
their own.
The new facility includes:
- 4 computers with restricted internet use
- an X-Box 360 with updated games
- a pool table
- 2 ‘chill out zones’ – soft cushions fill the old steam
room and jacuzzi
- 2 televisions.
Alternative curriculum pupils will be able to continue their
education studying GCSEs, OCNs, life skills and I.T. qualifications
alike.
The project came to fruition with thanks to Safer Vale funding,
New Deal, the Direct Service Organisation, ICT, Youth Services, the
team at Penarth Leisure Centre, focus groups/advisory young persons
panel, South Wales Police and PACT.
