Sport Development

Dragon Sport

The Dragon Sport initiative aims to get primary school pupils active from a young age by encouraging greater numbers of seven to 11-year-olds to take part in extra-curricular sport.

Funded by the National Lottery, Dragon Sport is a Sport Wales scheme

which is run locally by the Vale Council’s Dragon Sport team.

It focuses on eight key sports –

  • Rugby
  • Athletics
  • Cricket
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Tennis
  • Golf

Introduction to sport

By using appropriately sized equipment, Dragon Sport gives children a great introduction to those sports, hopefully sowing a seed for them to continue playing them for many years. The scheme also encourages children to sign up to the Chwarae Teg / Fair Play code of conduct.

Recruit volunteers

The flagship scheme also aims to recruit and train volunteers who wish to assist, set up or run clubs for youngsters.
