Woodland Trust Reserves
Cwm George & Casehill Woods
ST 153 723.
The woodlands are part of a concentration of ancient woodlands
west of Cardiff.
Through land acquisitions the site has developed into varied
habitats and is important for planted ancient woodland restoration
and the development of new native woodland.
The main restoration phase has been completed with the removal
of larch from the site. It now consists of mixed broadleaved
woodland dominated by oak and ash.
Worney Wood
SS 963 745.
Occupies a gently sloping, west facing area of former fertile
improved pasture on the northern outskirts of the village of
Llysworney. The key features are new native woodland and informal
public access.
Worney wood is sited within further fields of improved pasture,
with a small patch of trees to the north including an ancient tree,
and several old hedgerow trees around. There's a duck pond to the
south of the site.
Monks Wood
SS 914 717
Is a relatively small site planted in November 2000 and located
in a mostly un-wooded landscape sloping towards the sea. The
site was planted with native broadleaved trees and shrubs by the
residents of the town of Wick, situated approximately 1.5 miles to
the northeast.
A pond is situated at the wetter northern end, adjacent to an
area of willow planting and provides an attractive visitor feature,
as well as increasing the site’s ecological diversity.
