Tinkinswood and St Lythans Burial Chambers

 

Chamber

Tinkinswood was once a village but now all that remains is a Megalithic Burial Chamber built in 4000 BC. The site is owned by CADW.

 

Tinkinswood and St Lythans Burial Chambers Situated a mile away to the south is the St Lythans Burial Chamber, similar in both style and period.

 

Dimensions

This is a long cairn type, 3½ feet high. The mound is 300 feet long and 57 feet wide. The capstone is thought to be the largest of its kind in Great Britain.

 

Discovery

In 1914 the Burial Chamber was excavated by workmen who uncovered skeletal remains of about 50 people.

 

Pottery

From the Neolithic period, the Early Bronze Age and Roman period has been found.

 

Location

Road: Exit junction 33 of the M4, onto the A4232 to Barry. Exit 1st slip road, at roundabout take the 4th exit A48 to Cowbridge. At St Nicholas follow the signs for Dyffryn House. The Burial Chamber is in fields approximately 2 miles from the house and is signposted. Access is across 2 fields, over a wooden bridge and through kissing gates.
