Llantwit Major
Historic heart of the Vale.
Llantwit Major is steeped in history, with its narrow streets,
quaint stone cottages and old inns. The people of Llantwit Major
live in a place that has been occupied for over 3000 years.
National importance
Bronze and Iron Age inhabitants, and the Romans settled here
before the Celtic Church made this a place of national importance,
but the Normans constructed the oldest buildings.
Every aspect
Almost every period in history has left its mark on Llantwit
Major - you can see Iron Age hill forts, a Roman villa just outside
the town, Celtic crosses, and fine Tudor buildings - especially the
Town Hall, Old School, Great House and the pubs in the Town
Square.
Walks & beaches
Approximately one mile from the town is the Colhuw Valley
leading down to the coast and a small beach. This is a wonderful
starting point for a number of walks along the Glamorgan Heritage
Coast.
