Building Control - Competent Person Scheme
A Competent Person is a trades person or enterprise that has
been adjudged to be sufficiently competent to self-certify that its
work complies with "Part P Electrical Safety" of the Building
Regulations of England and Wales.
Electrical work undertaken during home improvements, renovation,
extensions, loft conversion, kitchen and bathroom refurbishments
must be notified to the local authority building control department
and carried out by a Competent Person.
It is hoped that moving towards self-certification will
significantly enhance compliance with the requirements of the
Building Regulations, reduce costs for firms joining recognised
schemes, and promote training and competence within the
industry.
It should also help tackle the problem of 'cowboy builders', and
assist local authorities with enforcement of the Building
Regulations.
Further information can be found on the LABC site http://www.competentperson.co.uk/.
Schemes authorised by the Department for Communities and Local
Government can be found on their
