Action for Lowland Hay Meadows
Lowland hay meadows are a priority habitat in the Vale of
Glamorgan
Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) and a priority for
conservation in Wales and in the UK. Hay meadows rich in
wildflowers used to be a common sight 50 years ago, but today they
are few and far between most having been lost due to agricultural
improvement.
Hay meadows need to be managed to maintain their diversity of
flowers and associated insect life or they will eventually scrub
over and develop into woodland. Below are two examples of projects
that are underway to restore and manage Vale of Glamorgan hay
meadows:
