Wildlife on the Web
The ecology team has revamped their
web pages with
loads of new information on the habitats and species that live in
the Vale as well as lots of ways that you can help protect the
plants and animals in your local area.
You can read all about the work that is being done to conserve
some of our speciality species – moving drains away from the kerbs to stop
great crested
newts falling down them or habitat management to conserve
the high brown fritillary – the last population of
this rare butterfly in Wales. You can also download the latest
edition of Biodiversity Matters – the wildlife
newsletter.

Or read about the Biodiversity Award – now in its third year. The
award recognises the important work that is being done in the Vale
by conservation groups, landowners and educational groups. The
results of the school’s Biodiversity Poster Competition (part of
Wales Biodiversity Week)
are now on the web too.

You can also find information on the Make Space for
Wildlife project and download the superb new leaflets. The
project has been designed to help you create a wildlife area in
your local patch – your back garden, school grounds or community
area.
If you’ve seen an interesting plant or animal you can now submit
it on the records
page – it really is important that we know what’s in the Vale
so that we know what needs conserving.
The ecology team has two important roles at the Council
- Considering protected species, areas and habitats – to ensure
that they are not negatively affected by development
- Helping to co-ordinate the Vale’s Local Biodiversity Action
Plan – working with conservation groups and individuals to protect
and conserve our important wildlife
You can also find details on the Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime -
a partnership the Council is now a member of.
