Contaminated Land
A principal duty of the Council is to protect residents and the
environment from any potential harm that may be caused by
contaminated land.
We ask three important questions in order to define
'contaminated land':
1. Is there a source of contamination?
2. What or who may be affected?
3. How does any contaminant get there?
By answering these three questions, we have all the information
needed to take action.
Where land has been identified as having a past use which
may have caused contamination, we:
1. Investigate and assess the site
2. Take action if the site poses a risk to human health or the
environment by identifying those responsible for the clean-up and
taking enforcement action where necessary.
All local authorities in Wales now have a duty to perform this
service under Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act
1990.
Details on how the Council fulfils its duties under Part IIA can be
found in our
Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy (PDF 960KB).
