Dog Fouling
It is currently an offence for dog owners not to remove any
faeces deposited by their dog. This legislation relates to most of
the land within the Vale of Glamorgan to which the public has
access. The offence is punishable by payment of a fixed penalty
fine or by summons under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996. There
are many signs that have been erected throughout the Vale of
Glamorgan to alert dog walkers to their responsibilities. Instances
of dog fouling can be reported on (029) 20673000. Fixed
Penalty Notices of £75.00 can be issued.
Control of Dogs By-Laws
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has introduced Control of Dogs
By-Laws. This will improve the cleanliness of the Vale by reducing
dog fouling. The By-Laws cover several main areas:
- Dogs on leads; the removal of faeces; dog ban in certain areas
of parks and open spaces.
- Removal of faeces on the adopted highway.
- Dogs on leads, the removal of faeces and dog ban in certain
areas at Cosmeston Lakes Country Park and Porthkerry Park.
- Dogs banned 1 May to 30 September inclusive on beaches, dogs on
leads and the removal of faeces on promenades and car parks.
- If you need to scoop the poop, please use either commercial
poop scoops or plastic bags. These bags can be deposited in the
"Poop Scoop" bins (painted bright red) which are available in many
of the parks and open spaces, or in any litter bin throughout the
Vale.
- The Council has also adopted the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act
1996 legislation which has resulted in 14 on-the-spot fines.
It is in everyone's interest to scoop the poop, so clear
up after your dog or face prosecution!
