Where to get a dogBoy and dog

If you think that you are able to offer a secure loving home to a dog, then you need to think about what breed you would like, and what age. Will you get the dog from a breeder or will you choose a rescue dog? Rescuing a dog can be very rewarding - you get a loving pet and you give the dog a second chance of a home.

You can also try breed-specific rescue. These are rescue organisations that deal with certain breeds of dog. This has the advantage that the people you talk to will know a lot about that breed of dog and can offer advice about whether it is the right breed for you. They will have dogs of various ages.

  • If you want a puppy and don't want to get one from a rescue centre make sure that you use a reputable breeder.
  • Ask questions about the breed of dog and any special care that the dog would need
  • Make sure that the breeder knows about the breed
  • He should ask you questions about how you plan to look after your puppy. Don't think that he is being cheeky for asking - he is just making sure that the dog goes to a good home
  • He should also be happy to answer your questions
  • He should give you information about the breed including possible health problems
  • Ask if the parents have been tested for health problems associated with the breed, e.g. hip displaysia
  • He should also be willing to take the dog back if your circumstances change and are no longer able to look after the dog
  • A good breeder will also be keen to follow up on the progress of your puppy
  • If you are not sure about a breeder do not buy from them. The Kennel Club has a list of registered breeders and you can contact them to find another if you are not happy.
  • Be aware of unregistered puppy farms. If you go somewhere to look at puppies and you are suspicious that it is a puppy farm contact our Trading Standards department 01446 709105.
