Light Pollution
Light pollution is any artificial light that is allowed to
illuminate areas not intended to be lit. Light pollution can
have a detrimental effect upon the local community and
environment.
The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 amended the
Environmental Protection Act 1990 to bring artificial light from
premises under the statutory nuisance regime. For light at a
premise to be a statutory nuisance it must unduly illuminate
another premise so as to cause nuisance or be prejudicial to
health. A typical example of light pollution would be an
inconsiderately directed security light shining into another
property’s
bedroom window.
There are however certain premises where lighting is exempt from
statutory nuisance this includes:
- Airports
- Harbour premises
- Railway premises
- Bus stations & associated facilities
- Prisons
- lighthouses
To avoid causing your neighbour light pollution the following
should be considered:
- Only illuminate the specified area required
- For domestic lighting 150 watt bulb is sufficient
- Only have lights in operation when required, consider fitting
infra –red detectors
- Ensure lighting is correctly angled
