Double Delight with Blue Flag Awards2011 Blue Flag at Barry Island

 

Whitmore Bay, Barry Island was proud to host the Keep Wales Tidy 2011 Blue Flag Unfurling Ceremony.

Environment, Sustainability and Housing Minister, John Griffiths presented the flags and personally hoisted Whitmore Bay's flag and presented Penarth Marina's to Leader of the Council, Councillor Gordon Kemp.

 

Vale scoops two flags

41 beaches and marinas in Wales met criteria to fly the coveted international Blue Flag. Penarth Marina and Whitmore Bay, Barry Island, retained their flags.

 

Judging

Beaches were judged against 30 criteria, including:

  • reaching the highest water quality
  • good litter management
  • easy to read information
  • strict dog control
  • sustainable environmental ethics

Marinas met 16 land based criteria including:

  • adequate waste reception facilities
  • provision of lifesaving equipment
  • commitment to respect
  • safeguarding local environment
