Co-mingling

Vicky Lannen, Waste Awareness Officer, shows the final cut to Miles Punter, Head of Visible ServicesCouncil staff have produced a short video which lifts the lid on exactly what happens to your recycling.

Miles Punter, Head of Visible Services (pictured right with Vicky Lannen, Waste Awareness Officer) explains:

"Our staff have made this film on a shoestring budget to educate, entertain and engage residents. It will give you plenty of tips about how to recycle, introduce you to some of our staff, and show you how your waste is sorted at the council’s waste management contractors’ plant in Cardiff.

"It's vital that we all understand the difference that diverting material from landfill can make because our actions today will impact on generations to come."

Do you currently recycle?

Do you recycle?

Miles added: "So far, the tremendous efforts of the residents have resulted in our being on the way to beating our recycling targets a year early. Our target for 2015/16 is 58%, which I think is achievable much sooner. If this trend continues, we could soon be leading the way on recycling throughout the whole of Wales.

"By using video and social media, we hope our film will reach a more diverse audience and give residents a simple way to share the recycling message; encouraging even more people to get on board with our popular co-mingling service.”

Your questions answered

Question received via YouTube

The quantity of material collected may increase with co-mingling, but has this increased the quantity of material that is used in the manufacture of new products? Has the co-mingling had any impact on the quality of material? Is glass used to make new glass, or is it all just ground down to make sand for construction (down-cycling)?

How is collecting domestic grass cuttings, burning oil/diesel to move it to and from the composting facility, sustainable?  See our response here

Even more materials can be added to your weekly collections. Great news that you can now include:

  1. Drained aerosols - please make sure they are empty, remove the lid and place both items in your box
  2. Cartons - such as Tetra Pak. Typically products include juice, soup and pet food pouches.
  3. Foil - please ensure that it is not contaminated with food/drink or chemicals before included; this is due to stringent health and safety rules at the Biffa site.
