Kitchen waste recycling process
What's involved?
You've asked what happens to your kitchen waste
collected:
Have you seen our photo video?
(1) In the kitchen
You start the process by collecting waste such as fish bones and
cooked food. Be sure to follow our tips for reusing food, it is better to
reduce the amount of food waste created in the first place than
recycle it.
|
|
(2) Place your caddy kerbside
By 7a.m. every week, using biodegradable bags and
your kerbside caddy. Please be sure there's nothing in the
caddy that could risk the load being rejected.
|
(3) Cowbridge Compost
Every weekday the recycling vehicle takes your kitchen
waste to the discreetly located site in Cowbridge. (If you
look closely, you can see the in-vessel plant on the horizon)
|
|
(4) The process starts
A process called aerobic digestion, where air is used, allows
organic matter to decompose. The recycling plant meets strict
environmental health requirements.
|
(5) Up to 4 months...
This is approximately how long the aerobic process takes.
Decomposing kitchen waste material is moved down a
bay (pictured). The temperature is monitored and more air
allowed to enter the heap.
|
|
(6) Crops will then grow
The end product, after being tested, is used to fertilize
crops on the farm at Cowbridge Compost. The fertilizer will
help products such as daffodils. Thank you: you can be proud of
what you've achieved.
