Kitchen Waste Recycling Collections
REMEMBER
YOUR KITCHEN WASTE IS COLLECTED ON THE SAME DAY THAT YOUR REFUSE
NORMALLY IS.
Kitchen waste is collected weekly and refuse on alternate
weeks.
The scheme to date:
Phase one
5,000 residents piloted the scheme from 2nd February
- 1st May '09, a decision was made to make it a
permanent for those involved. Parts of Penarth, Barry Island, St.
Athan & Camp, Lavernock, Sully and Dinas Powys were first to go
live.
Phase two
The scheme expanded to included a further 2,000 households in
July 2009. More parts of Dinas Powys, Barry, St, Athan and Penarth
were included.
Phase three
March 1st 2010 will see a major roll out of the scheme. The
whole of Penarth, Dinas Powys, Leckwith and Michaelstone-le-Pit are
signed up. This means a total of around 20,000 residents will be
included.
The future
By 2013 the whole of the Vale of Glamorgan should hopefully be
on the scheme. Although at this stage it is undecided which areas
will join, when.

The future
The roll out in March is the first of a series of three over the
next 12 months where we hope to incorporate all households within
the Vale onto the scheme
. later on this year we will incorporate the remainder
of Barry onto the scheme and then the final roll out will catch all
outstanding properties.
Remember
Recycling needs to be left out by 7am on allocated collection
days. Black
bin bags will be
collected on alternate weeks.
Your kit:
- Small kitchen caddy - keep it
where you prepare your food.
- A supply of biodegradable bags to line your
kitchen caddy.
- Larger kerbside caddy - this will be
placed kerbside.
Joining the scheme allows you to:
- review buying habits from food waste; you can perhaps save
money
- have a container with a lockable lid; this should discourage
scavenging animals
- contribute to recycling more, meeting Vale targets and avoiding
fines
- contribute to a better environment - we send less to
landfill and avoid generating more harmful gases like
methane.
What's in your caddy?
Place items such as fish and meat bones,
pasta, rice, dairy products, bread and vegetables in caddies. Those
involved already have received a list of "Dos and
Don'ts". It is important to follow this so the end product (a soil
enhancer) is the best quality. It is better not to
create food waste in the first place, or follow food recipes if possible.
