DIY
Do it yourself
Why not make your own compost container? Remember a good
composter needs ventilation, insulation and a top
cover.
Position
It is better to situate a composter on soil to allow access to
worms.
Ideas
Why not make one of the following bins:
- Carpet
Reuse old carpet wrapped over
chicken wire moulded into the shape you require; just ensure the
underside of the carpet faces out.
- Dustbin
Either cut off the base or drill
several large holes (base and sides) in an old dustbin.
- Wooden palette
Nail together wooden pallets to form three outer edges, line the
inside with chicken wire. Fill pallet
gaps with either thick cardboard, hay, old carpet or
even newspaper. At the front nail two posts to hold loose removable
boards for easy access. Cover the top with an old piece of
carpet.
- Tyres
Build a tyre stack that
grows with your compost heap. Cover the top with an old piece of
carpet.
Remember
When built you will need to air your composter bin regularly
either with a long stick or a fork. Once ready - around a year
from starting - dismantle your composter and use the compost for
your garden. You can then start again for your next batch!
