Home composting
What's in your bin?
UK-wide figures suggest that up to a third of an average
householders' annual waste is made up of kitchen and garden
waste.
Why compost?
It's a great way of saving money and provides an
environmentally-friendly way of reducing your rubbish. Having your
home compost bin allows you to conveniently enrich your own soil
with your own product. We recommend that you still use our
kitchen waste recycling service for items such
as cooked food, fish and meat.

Don't forget: it's best not to produce waste in the first
instance. The peaches on the right should have been eaten, or made
into a jam or a pudding before rotting and becoming
spoiled.

Tips for successful composting:
- Site your compost in a sunny spot
- Regularly stir to air with a stick/fork
- Don't fill it more than 80 per cent
- Chop chunky items into smaller pieces
- Place your composter on soil, allowing worms in
- Keep a small container to hand, like an ice-cream tub
with holes in the lid, to reduce trips from the kitchen to the
garden
