Frequently Asked QuestionsKitchen Waste

Why does my compost bin stink?

When vegetation decomposes, it's normal for it to smell a bit, but not stink. It's likely not enough air is getting in. Get a fork and give it a mix.

Why do the contents look dry?

Water the compost until moist or alternatively leave the composter lid off when it rains. Either you are not hydrating the contents enough or not adding enough liquid products (such as fruit and vegetables that may decompose).

My compost looks slimy - any ideas? compost in hands

You are probably adding too much 'green' waste such as leaves, grass, etc. Add newspaper, egg boxes or toilet roll centres to get a balance of ingredients. Stir with a fork or a stick.

Why does my composter 'slow down'?

In winter, heat-loving bacteria in your bin slow the process down. Purchase a liquid activator, or wrap an old carpet/duvet around it to help the process continue.composting family

When will my compost be ready to use?

When it looks brown and crumbly; it should also smell quite sweet and earthy. Generally this will take about a year for an average-sized container.

What can I use my compost for?

It's great to use as a soil conditioner, potting mix, mulch or as a top dressing.

Why has my bin attracted flies?

A composter needs a certain amount of micro-organisms and worms to work. The flies are probably fruit ones. Stir and put a layer of scrunched newspaper on the top. Hot spells can also affect their presence.

My compost bin seems to feed slugs, how do I get rid of them?

It's quite normal to find a selection of wildlife in your compost bin. Crushed egg shells are a repellent so add these to your compost bin. Larger slugs are attracted to decaying vegetable matter, consider the balance of ingredients.

Will my compost bin attract rats?slug

Rats may be attracted to a garden for a variety of reasons (leftover bird seeds/pet food). They seek shelter in outbuildings and don't like to be disturbed. If you visit your compost bin regularly, they'll keep away.

When siting your compost bin, wrap it with chicken-wire, allowing worms to enter and preventing rats.
