Gypsum and plasterboard
New policy from 1st April 2009
The Environment Agency has revised its policies for disposing
gypsum waste to landfill. It's no longer permitted to be placed in
general skips/mixed refuse containers at Sully or Llandow
civic amenity sites.
How do I dispose of it?
Small quantities of gypsum such as
plasterboard, plaster and other gypsum products produced from home
DIY may be accepted at Sully and Llandow if:
- separated at home
- bought to the the attention of staff on
arrival
- placed in a special separate container
for gypsum products only
Failure to inform the crew on site you have gypsum
waste may lead to residents being asked to reload their vehicle and
remove the material from the facility.
Why has the change come about?
Gypsum products contain high sulphate
content, they are highly polluting when landfilled.
Other recycling
Clean uncontaminated plasterboard can be
recycled; your building supplier may be able to provide more
information on where it can be taken. Mixed or dry plaster should
never be washed into drains/surface water systems, as this
will cause water pollution.
Further information
A waste protocol for gypsum from waste plasterboard is being
developed and is available from the Environment Agency,
