Recycling in schools

All hands on deck!

Recycling is something that everyone in a school can be involved with and it’s probably something that the children are familiar with or have heard of.

Kerbside recycling scheme

Most schools in the Vale take part in the Council’s kerbside recycling scheme - the same scheme that our residents use to recycle their paper, cans, glass, cardboard and plastic.

In a school, paper can be the main thing thrown away, so this can be the biggest amount of material taken to be recycled from our schools.

Yellow Woods Challenge

A national campaign supported locally where our Vale schools collect old yellow pages telephone directories for recycling. Last year over 13 tonnes of directories were collected by 39 schools. The directories have now been recycled into new products such as loft insulation. Cash prizes are available to the three schools who collect the most yellow pages per pupil. Let us know if you are keen to get involved with this initiatives

Composting

We have given local schools free compost bins as some of the waste from our schools can easily be turned into compost. Ideas have included left-over fruit recycling!
