What is the 5x60 scheme?

5x60 logo5x60 is all about getting secondary school pupils more active more often by encouraging them to exercise for at least 60 minutes, five days a week.

5x60 officers survey pupils to draw up a wish-list of extra-curricular activities, and then get to work on making as much happen as possible during lunchtimes and after school.

The aim is to provide a mixed programme of sports and activities so that everyone will find something that they enjoy while getting fit at the same time. 5x60 gives pupils the chance to either try out something new or enjoy more of the activities that they already love.

The Welsh Government funded initiative is run by Sport Wales and is supported locally by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s sports and play development team.

5x60 in the Vale

Frisbee golf is one of the 5x60 activities at Llantwit Major Comprehensive SchoolThe scheme started up in the county back in 2007 and we have a full team of 5x60 officers in place to start the new school term with a bang.

Rachel Shepherd covers Bryn Hafren and St Richard Gwyn, Steffan Williams works in Ysgol Bro Morgannwg and Barry Comprehensive, Chris Ferrier flies the 5x60 flag in Llantwit Major and Cowbridge while Pete O'Sullivan oversees the two Penarth schools - Stanwell and St Cyres.

They are all being kept busy by pupils throwing themselves into both traditional and non-traditional sports and activities including climbing, street dance, trampolining, indoor cricket, tag rugby, frisbee golf, beach volleyball and fencing!

Get involved!
If you are a pupil at one of the Vale’s secondary schools and haven’t taken part in a 5x60 activity yet, then what are you waiting for?!

See your school's latest 5x60 timetable or visit your 5x60 officer to find out more.

Fencing is a popular 5x60 activityIf your school days are long behind you, then you can still get involved in 5x60. Key to the success of the scheme is local community sports clubs, coaches and volunteers putting on the sessions that the pupils request. Once a pupil has had a taste of a new sport thanks to 5x60, it is hoped that their enthusiasm leads to them going on to join a local club.
