Snow clearance priority routes
If you know your postcode find out our salting and snow
clearing routes

We concentrate on primary salting routes such as:
- A and B Roads
- Main arterial roads
- Access to hospitals
- Access to fire station and other important facilities
In what order are roads cleared of snow?
In the worst weather we cannot guarantee that every road will be
kept open at all times as we do not have the resources to make this
possible. Only once the main roads are clear, we will work on other
roads.
During the worst weather we will concentrate our efforts on a
defined network of principal roads which are tackled in the
following order:
- Major roads between towns and strategic routes on the defined
network
- Distributor roads leading to the defined network from the
smaller towns and villages
- All remaining routes and responding to reports of emergencies
on unclassified roads
- Footways in shopping areas
Priorities will, however, be determined by prevailing
conditions
It may not be possible to clear every road, and some roads may
have to be left to thaw naturally. Snow ploughs only work
effectively when snow is more than 5cm (2 in) deep, they also
cannot clear areas on roads that have road humps or similar traffic
calming measures or narrow roads with parked cars.
What priority is given to clearing footpaths of snow?
We have an approved snow clearance footpath network which is
treated when snow requires clearing. This network covers locations
where there is the greatest number of pedestrians such as
pedestrianised shopping areas. This service is subject to resources
being available as our priority is in clearing the primary road
network.
To report a road or footway that requires snow clearance
please contact 01446 700111. These requests will be considered in
accordance with available resources.
