The Castleland area of Barry was officially declared
a Renewal Area on April 28 2010. The Renewal Area will last
for 12 years.
This demonstrates the Council’s
commitment to the area and the determination to reverse the decline
of the town centre and the surrounding residential area. The
area extends from the west side of Hill Street to the Gladstone
Road junction with Broad Street and from the shops North of Holton
Road to Dock View Road. It also includes Bendricks Road and
part of Hayes Road. The new Renewal Area overlaps with the existing
Communities First Area.
The aims of a Renewal Area are to reverse the
decline of the area by improving housing, improving general
amenities and their local environment, developing
partnerships, increasing community and market confidence and
maximising external investment in to the area.
Facelifts for free
One of the main regeneration tools that we
intend to use in the Castleland Renewal Area is the use of
“Facelifting Schemes.” These schemes are designed to stabilise and
give confidence to properties in an area through works to external
elevations so improving the visual appearance and feel of a street
or block.
“Facelift Grants” will be offered to all
property owners including owner occupiers and landlords. The grants
will be completely FREE with NO CONDITIONS attached. The grant will
cover:
|
The renewal of fascia boards in
UPVC
|
The renewal of rainwater gutters and
downpipes
|
|
The replacement of timber doors and windows in
UPVC
|
Stone / brick cleaning and repointing
|
|
Over-rendering
works
|
Installation of loft insulation

Who is eligible?
All property owners in the selected streets and roads are
eligible, regardless of how long you have lived there. There is a
simple owner's agreement form to fill in that you have to send back
to us by a specified date. If you don't do this, we can't do the
work. We hope that everyone who is eligible takes up the offer in
order to maximise the visual impact on the neighbourhood.
Renewal Area office open
The Castleland Renewal Area office at 198
Holton Road is now open following extensive refurbishment. The
office is a vital part of the investment in the area by the council
and will provide a local point of contact for residents as an
information and advice centre.
The premises are on the corner of Holton Road
and George Street and are occupied by the Council’s Renewal Area
Team as well as the Castleland Communities First Team.
In addition, day surgeries by partner agencies
such as Care and Repair in the Vale, Citizens Advice Bureau and
Community Police will be held there.
