Twenty schools also entered the junior section
of the competition this year, 12 Primary Schools and 8 Nursery
Schools. The Primary Schools were judged by Mrs Mary Ponting and
Mrs Rosamund Davies, the Nursery Schools were judged by Mrs Pam
Robins and Mr Richard Skinner (Secretary of the Best Kept Village
Competition committee).
The schools had all undertaken outdoor
projects growing plants including anything from trees and soft
fruit to vegetables, herbs and flowers. Seeds had been sown by the
pupils and studied as they developed into seedlings and then
maturing plants. Insects were collected and identified, some came
off plant leaves and some from beneath logs and large stones.
Composting and recycling were practised at
most schools and vegetables and fruit were often eaten as part of
the school’s healthy eating programme. The judges were impressed by
the enthusiasm of the children and the quality of work undertaken.
