Conservation and Design

The Conservation and Design Team play a principal role in the management of the historic environment, and provide a key resource in the following areas:

St. Lythans Burial Chamber

Ancient Monuments

The Vale has over 100 "Scheduled Monuments" and very many more monuments of local significance. Scheduled monuments are protected in law as they are of national significance. Local monuments may include statues, war memorials or other structures which are not occupied.

Barry Castle

Listed Buildings

The Vale of Glamorgan has over 700 Listed Buildings and many other buildings of architectural and historic interest. These range from Castles and Manor houses to Mile posts and telephone boxes. All of which are protected in law.

Conservation Areas

There are currently 38 designated Conservation Areas in the Vale of Conservation AreaGlamorgan. The team deals with policy formulation, including the preparation of conservation area appraisals, as well as proposals for new designation and de-designations.

County Treasures

Each of the 27 community areas within the Vale were surveyed by a volunteer workforce  and the resulting document contains scheduled ancient monuments, listed buildings, listed parks and gardens and buildings that are of local importance but that are not contained within the statutory lists.

Urban/Building Design

The team also provide advice to the Council on architecture and design.

In practice the group deals with a significant number of enquires relating to listed buildings and important buildings in conservation areas. Specialist advice is given on the alteration and appropriate repair of historic buildings by the promotion of appropriate traditional and modern repair technologies, materials and design.

The team deals with all applications for listed building consent. In March 2003 the Council became the second authority in Wales to be allowed to make decisions on certain applications for Listed Building Consent without reference to the National Assembly for Wales.

The Conservation and Design Team frequently assist development control officers in providing advice on development proposals involving sites in conservation areas and may also be involved in proposals involving development of a major scale or environmental impact.
