County Treasures

County Treasures

The concept of ‘County Treasures’ dates back to pre-1974 when South Glamorgan County Council attempted to produce an inventory of historic assets located in its administrative area.

Each of the 27 community areas within the Vale have now been surveyed by a volunteer workforce of local people, teachers, history society members, local Councillors and other interested individuals to reveal and record the many items that could be of architectural and historic interest; and which, further to detailed scrutiny, research and qualification, were considered worthy of inclusion. This inventory, therefore, more than any other provides an account of what is considered of local importance by local people.

It contains scheduled monuments, listed buildings, listed parks and gardens and buildings that are of local importance but that are not contained within the statutory list.

Entry on the list does not imply any right of access to properties that are not in public ownership.

The privacy of property owners should be respected at all times.

County Treasures Addendum

Since the adoption of the list, a number of events have occurred which require the amendment of the document. These include the identification, by Cadw, of four new scheduled monuments (and the de-scheduling of one) and five new listed buildings.

Recently, the Council has also completed a full survey of its 39 conservation areas which has identified a number of buildings which meet the criteria for inclusion as locally listed County Treasures.

In addition, the addendum acts as an erratum correcting errors of fact that were inadvertently included in the adopted document.

County Treasures Supplementary Planning Guidance

The Council has prepared Supplementary Planning Guidance relating to the locally important buildings to supplement its Adopted Unitary Development Plan.

The Supplementary Planning Guidance document provides further information on the criteria for selection of a locally listed building and the planning policy background for buildings contained within the list.
