Use of CCTV
CCTV, one of the responsibilities of our Community Safety Unit,
has made a major contribution to an enhanced feeling of safety
within the Vale
of Glamorgan's major towns.
A CCTV system was first introduced to the Vale of Glamorgan in
Barry in 1994, and later extended to Penarth.
In addition to helping achieve a major reduction in crime, the
CCTV system is also used as a tool to increase community
safety.
CCTV has helped people in distress by calling for ambulances
when people have fallen, and has called out the fire service a
number of times after noticing fires. It has also been successful
in helping the Police to locate missing persons and reunite lost
pets with their owners.
As partners, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Police have
worked hard to get maximum benefit from the system, and officers
have been called to thousands of incidents by CCTV operators that
have resulted in hundreds of arrests for various offences ranging
from burglary to assault and public order.
The service, which operates a strict Code of Practice with due
regard for civil liberties and data protection, has been enhanced
by a radio communications system linking traders, the police and
CCTV.
