Adult Protection Training - Available Now
Specialist training is now available to all Vale of Glamorgan Council staff, especially those who regularly come into contact with vulnerable adults as part of their work and also for people who provide care.
The training available at three levels for staff with different roles enables participants to understand the important role they have to play in implementing the South Wales Adult Protection (SWAP) Procedure.
The SWAP procedure was launched in February 2002 after the Welsh Assembly Government for Wales - now Welsh Assembly Government, called on local authorities to form a multi-agency policy to protect and support vulnerable adults.
It is underpinned by the belief that everyone has the right to live without experiencing any form of abuse, whether that is physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, financial etc. and is the joint work of South Wales social service authorities, health authorities, NHS trusts, criminal justice agencies and victim support agencies.
The procedure aims to develop strategies designed to prevent and/or reduce the risk of abuse from occurring and clarify and support the roles and responsibilities of practitioners tasked with caring and supporting vulnerable adults.
The Welsh Assembly Government 'In Safe Hands' guidance document states: 'It is the duty of every citizen, not just employed staff, to report any concerns they may have in relation to the abuse/inappropriate care or suspected abuse or inappropriate care of a vulnerable adult."
Three levels of training on the procedure are now available to Vale of Glamorgan staff:
Level 1 (half day course) - Targets staff who may come into contact with vulnerable adults but are not responsible for their care e.g. domestic and catering staff, administration staff etc
Level 2 (one day course) - Targets staff who have direct input in client care and/or service provision e.g. support workers, home carers, occupational therapists, social workers, housing officers, leisure centre assistants, front line staff etc.
Level 3 (two day course) - Targets managers and staff who have responsibility for procedures and are involved in strategy - e.g. designated lead managers, assistant team managers etc.
