What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse refers to any incident of violence or aggression,
wherever and whenever it occurs. The abuse can take many forms
physical, sexual, emotional, or financial by a family member,
partner, or ex-partner in an existing or previous relationship,
regardless of gender, culture or sexual orientation

The national helpline offers advice and support to anyone
experiencing domestic abuse. Refuge provides safe, emergency
accommodation through a network of refuges throughout the UK. It
also offers a children's programme, individual and group
counselling for women who have suffered abuse, help with
resettlement and an outreach project for women from ethnic minority
communities.

There are a number of police domestic abuse units, which have
staff specially trained to help people experiencing domestic abuse.
They work closely with other organisations such as local solicitors
and Women’s Aid groups. Your local police station, in the phone
book under Police, will be able to tell you if they have a domestic

The centre is open 5 days a week 9:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. After these
hours it is open by special arrangement.
Its services include advocacy, advice, information and
networking to other organization working within domestic abuse.
The Colcot Centre is able to offer counselling for men and women
who have experience domestic abuse, it is also piloting a
self-referral domestic abuse perpetrator group and which will
include support to female partners. It is hoped by May 2007 they
will be able to look at the provision of children’s groups.

SSAFA Forces Help offers an all-embracing service to the whole
of the RAF community dealing with a bread range of social support
issues in a confidential, professional and sympathetic manner. The
service deals not only with social work problems, but the entire
rang of personal and family related problems, including domestic
