Index for Children with Special and Particular Needs

To make sure that you receive up to date information about services, events and schemes for you and your child, please register your child on the Index of Children with Special and Particular Needs.

 

Early Support

Early Support Wales is funded by the Welsh Government and it aims to improve the lives of children age 0-5yrs, who have additional needs. In the Vale of Glamorgan, Early Support funding has been used to develop the Sense of Play Project. There are many useful publications for parents and carers and training available for parents and professionals.

 

Council Services

The Council provides many services for children with special and particular needs:

 

Education

The Pupil Support Service is available for children age 0 - 19 years and includes Special Educational Needs, Education Psychology, Education Welfare and Speech and Language services. There are a number of special schools and mainstream schools that provide special needs units.

 

Social Services

The Child Health and Disability Team provide a variety of support to disabled children. Their service is aimed at children who are aged between 0 – 18 years and who have a learning disability or a significant physical or sensory impairment.

Leisure

The Sports and Play Development Team create opportunities and initiatives all year round for people of all ages and abilities to take part in physical activities.  There is also a Disability Sports Directory of all sports clubs suitable for children and young people with disabilities. 

 

Health

If you feel your child has any special needs, talk to your GP or Health Visitor and they can refer you to the Special Needs Health Visitor.

The following organisations offer information, help and support:

 

  • Contact a Family  National helpline: 0808 808 3555, local helpline: 029 2039 6624 providing information and advice about benefits, special educational needs, medical conditions, local parent support groups and much more.
  • Cardiff and Vale Parents Federation The Federation is for parents, families, friends and unpaid carers of disabled children and adults with learning disabilities living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. They produce the 'Where You Stand' Directory of services for people with a learning disability in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
  • Autism in the Vale The is a service provides by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and you will find information, support groups and advice for children and adults who have Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
