Care in your Own Home
What services are available?
If you are having difficulty coping at home, due to old age,
disability or mental health problems, a range of services are
available to help you to remain living as safely and independently
as possible in your own home.
These include:
- personal care, such as help with washing, dressing, using the
toilet, getting around and help at mealtimes (these are called
‘domiciliary services’),
- occupational therapy advice for independence or safe care.
It may be that you are looking for assistance for a short time,
for example, whilst you are recovering from an illness, or need
support after a period in hospital. Whatever service you are
looking for, there are a variety of different service providers
from the private and public sectors.
You may have someone who helps you with daily living at home –
your spouse or partner, a relative or friend (known as a carer) –
there are also services to help that person.
If you are able to pay the full cost of care in the home you may
wish to arrange this yourself. You will find information here to
help you decide on what services you wish to arrange.
