General

DirectGov: Information for disabled people and carers in areas such as employment, health and education. There's also advice on financial support, independent living and rights.

 

IT and Disabilities

AbilityNet: A one-stop shop for IT need assessment, technical expertise, advice and support. They also supply adapted computer equipment for people with a wide range of disabilities. Services are free for those who have no statutory or other funding.

 

Specific support groups

Alzheimers Society: The UK's leading care and research charity for people with any form of dementia and their carers. Includes facts about dementia, information about diagnosis, advice for carers, research, news, discussion forums and live chat.

 

Mind: The website of the leading mental health charity in England and Wales, offering online factsheets, mental health news, frequently asked questions about legal issues, and contact information for Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan.

 

Multiple Sclerosis Society: The UK's largest charity for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS), amounting to about 85,000 people in the UK. At the website you can catch up on the latest news, learn about the organisation, find your nearest branch, or become a member.

 

Parkinsons Disease Society: Support, advice and information to people with Parkinsons, their carers, families and friends, and to health and social services professionals involved in management and care.

 

Royal National Institute for the Blind: Information, support and advice to over two million people in the UK with sight problems.

 

Royal National Institute for deaf people: Free, downloadable factsheets and leaflets covering issues that affect deaf and hard of hearing people; news; evaluation of new products and technology; and interactive facilities such as discussion forums, online sign language practice sessions, and a Fingerspelling programme.

 

Sorted

Sorted is a Vale of Glamorgan Community Service that provides work-based activities for adults with learning disabilities. They take orders for mail shots, packaging, colour & black & white copying, programmes & tickets, scanning & laminating, notices and flyers.

 

Spinal Injuries Association: News and research, information about holidays and leisure, help and advice, and an interactive area to exchange e-correspondence with people or share problems.

Financial Advice

The Friendly Trust: Financial advice and support to people with a learning disability along with their family/carer - based in Cardiff and working in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Department of Health: A practical guide for disabled people or carers, covering services and rights.

 

The Disability Rights Commission Wales: Wales has the highest proportion of disabled people in the whole of Great Britain. The DRC Wales website provides information about disability issues and DRC activities specific to Wales. Also links to the main DRC site that includes a Know Your Rights section and legal advice about disability discrimination.
