Why do we consult residents?

It's vital that we consult with our local residents, businesses and visitors to help us deliver the best possible services and provide value for money. 

What is consultation?

Consulting simply means talking with residents, offering them an opportunity to share their views with us and then using those views to help us deliver service improvements, new developments, customer satisfaction, spending priorities, and so on. 

There are a great number of factors that influence decisions in local government and we want to ensure that the views of our residents are one of these.

Although it wouldn’t be practical to consult our residents about every single thing we do, when it comes to the bigger picture, we will ask for input to help us make those decisions that will affect us all.

How do we do this?

In a variety of ways. Different issues often require different approaches and this is why we have developed a range of tools that we can use to ask residents their opinions.

Participation Cymru have worked with a number of organisations in Wales to develop National Principles for Public Engagement in Wales. These set out a number of key principles that public organisations should abide by when consulting with residents. We are happy to endorse these Principles, which make it clear how we should approach consultation and engagement in the Vale.

So what do we do?

There is almost always at least one consultation project underway in the Vale.  You can find out about these on our Consultation in the Vale page.

Whenever possible we try to get out of the office and speak, face to face, with our residents. If you are a Vale resident, then when we want to know more about how you feel about a range of issues. We often turn to our Vale Viewpoint panel for answers. Why not sign up - it won't take up much of your time and it's a way to make sure your opinion helps drive council decisions and policy.
