The Vale of Glamorgan Council Mayor for 2011/2012 is Councillor John Clifford, who is an elected member for Llantwit Major.

John was born in Ferndale in the Rhondda and at the age of 3 weeks moved to Llantwit Major.   He was educated in Llantwit Major School and at the age of 12 years won a scholarship to Bridgend College, where he later qualified as a Quantity Surveyor.

He started work with Brydon London, a firm of chartered quantity surveyors and worked at RAF St Athan for 5 years.  He then took up a position as a bonus surveyor with a firm of builders called John Morgan who were engaged with the building of the Aberthaw Power Station ‘A’.  John decided to specialise in the industrial painting side of contracting and this part of his career took him to work at Berkeley Nuclear Power Station; Oldbury Power Station and then on to RAF Uxbridge; Biggin Hill Staff College and Staff College Camberley.  He moved back to Llantwit Major in 1973 and worked for the International Paint Company.

John has been a member of Llantwit Major Town Council since 1972 and  served that council as their Town Mayor in 1984/85.

He joined the Vale of Glamorgan Council in 2004 and prior to becoming Mayor was the Chairman of the Lifelong Learning Scrutiny Committee.  He has also served as a member of the Social Care and Health Scrutiny Committee, Licensing Committee, Voluntary Sector Liaison Committee and Social Services Appeals Committee.  He represents this council on the Cardiff Institute for the Blind; the Vale of Glamorgan Citizens Advice Bureau and the Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast Advisory Group.

John is married to Christine, who he has known since childhood.  They have two children and four grandchildren.  He is a well known and much respected resident of Llantwit Major through his work in the community and his involvement with St Illtud’s Church.   He sings in St Illtud’s Church Choir and the Cantorian Choir.
