The Vale of Glamorgan Council Mayor for
2011/2012 is Councillor John Clifford, who is an elected member for
Llantwit Major.
John was born in Ferndale in the Rhondda and
at the age of 3 weeks moved to Llantwit Major. He was
educated in Llantwit Major School and at the age of 12 years won a
scholarship to Bridgend College, where he later qualified as a
Quantity Surveyor.
He started work with Brydon London, a firm of
chartered quantity surveyors and worked at RAF St Athan for 5
years. He then took up a position as a bonus surveyor with a
firm of builders called John Morgan who were engaged with the
building of the Aberthaw Power Station ‘A’. John decided to
specialise in the industrial painting side of contracting and this
part of his career took him to work at Berkeley Nuclear Power
Station; Oldbury Power Station and then on to RAF Uxbridge; Biggin
Hill Staff College and Staff College Camberley. He moved back
to Llantwit Major in 1973 and worked for the International Paint
Company.
John has been a member of Llantwit Major Town
Council since 1972 and served that council as their Town
Mayor in 1984/85.
He joined the Vale of Glamorgan Council in
2004 and prior to becoming Mayor was the Chairman of the Lifelong
Learning Scrutiny Committee. He has also
served as a member of the Social Care and Health Scrutiny
Committee, Licensing Committee, Voluntary Sector Liaison Committee
and Social Services Appeals Committee. He represents this
council on the Cardiff Institute for the Blind; the Vale of
Glamorgan Citizens Advice Bureau and the Vale of Glamorgan Heritage
Coast Advisory Group.
John is married to Christine, who he has known
since childhood. They have two children and four
grandchildren. He is a well known and much respected resident
of Llantwit Major through his work in the community and his
involvement with St Illtud’s Church. He sings in St
Illtud’s Church Choir and the Cantorian Choir.
