Registration FAQs
Who can register to vote?
You can register to vote if you are:
- 16 or over (but you can not vote until you are 18). If your
18th birthday is just before an election it is a good idea to
register now so that you are able to vote on Election Day.
- A British, Irish Republic or Commonwealth citizen
Or
A citizen
of a European Union country living in the UK
Or
A citizen
of the Channel Islands or Isle of Man living in the UK
Am I registered to vote?
An electoral registration officer can tell you. Call 01446
709748 or 709570, or email electoralregistration@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk
If you filled in the annual canvass registration form that is
delivered to your door between September and November each year you
should already be registered.
How do I register to vote?
To register to vote, you need to complete an electoral
registration form. Fill it in, sign it personally and return it to
your local electoral registration office.
If you have not recently moved home and you filled in and
returned the annual registration form that came through your door
in the autumn, you do not need to register again.
Where do I get an electoral registration form?
You can get a form from your local electoral registration
office.

Can I register to vote over the phone?
No, but you can call your local electoral registration office to
ask them to send you a registration form.
Do I have to go somewhere to register to vote?
No. You just need to send a registration form to your local
electoral registration office.
I'm a student and I'm not sure where I should register to
vote?
Students are entitled to register at both their home address and
their university address. Although it is an offence to vote more
than once in a national election, you can vote in local elections
at both of your addresses.
Are you entitled to vote here if you’re moving abroad?
If you’re going to live abroad, you can register to vote in
Parliamentary and European Parliamentary elections in this country.
You can live abroad for 15 years and still keep your right to vote
in the United Kingdom, but you must fill in an overseas form every
year.
I have been refused credit because my name is not on the
Electoral Register. What can I do?
If your name is not on the register you need to complete a
Rolling Registration Form and return it to the Electoral Unit. It
will take between 2 and 6 weeks to get your name on the register
depending upon when we receive your form.
If it appears your name is on the register then the Electoral
Services Unit can provide you with a letter to confirm this. You
can then present it to the organisation or company you are dealing
with.
I have moved house recently. What should I do?
If you have recently moved house you must return the rolling
registration form to ensure that you are registered in the Vale of
Glamorgan. Do not assume that you are registered to vote just
because you are registered to pay council tax at your new home.
Can I register at more than one address?
Yes, you can. You can also register for two addresses if you
have a second home and live there regularly.
Students studying away from home, at college or university, can
register to vote both at their home and term-time address.
Both students and those with a second home have the right to
vote in respect of both addresses at the time of a local election
but must choose only one address to vote in respect of when
parliamentary elections are held. It is illegal to vote twice at
the same election.
