Three extra products can now be recycled using the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s mixed recycling collection service.

ailgylchuCartons, drained aerosols and clean foil can be included in recycling boxes in the Vale of Glamorgan every week.

Rinsed cartons (Tetra Paks), that typically contain soups, drinks, pet food and other wet products, and drained aerosols, including hair sprays and deodorants (ideally with lids and caps removed), and clean foil products, can all be included in the council’s mixed (co-mingled) kerbside collection for recycling.

Cabinet member for visible and building services, Councillor Geoffrey Cox, said: "We are particularly pleased to increase the amount of materials that can be recycled conveniently by our residents at the kerbside and are happy to announce this just in time for the holiday period. I would personally like to thank every home that recycles – each of you contributes to a bigger picture."

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s service provider for treating recycling, Biffa, are happy to accept clean foil as part of the ‘cans’ ingredient of the weekly resident and business mixed collections, as well as cartons and emptied aerosols.

Commercial manager at the Vale council, John Davies, said: "This means even more materials can now be diverted from black bags that would be otherwise be destined for landfill sites – a real coup for residents and commercial customers alike.

"We have some other good news too, one of the items that we collect as part of our free bulky items collection, mattresses, are now being diverted from landfill, with many elements of each one being recycled."

Selection of foilResidents are asked to remember that material placed out for collection has to be hand sorted by staff at Biffa’s materials recycling facility in Cardiff. This is an unpleasant job, so please make sure your recycling is washed before it is put out for collection.

Biffa are reporting low contamination rates since the 19 September 2011 switch from the former kerbside separated recycling system to mixed recycling, with just 2-3% contamination of paper, glass, cans, card and plastic each week.
