Auditor General commends improved performance of Vale of
Glamorgan Council

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has improved its
performance in most key service areas, a report by the Auditor
General for Wales has concluded.
In its Annual Improvement Report, the Wales Audit Office said
the council has strong corporate management arrangements in place
and is securing improvement across a range of services.
Other highlights of the report include:
- The council has good arrangements in place for managing
its resources and driving change
- The council can demonstrate improvement in most key
service areas
- The council is working effectively with partners to
improve community safety and services for specific
users
- The council has made good progress in delivering
improvements in social care
- Results in schools are good but there is a decline in
attendance in secondary schools
- The council has good arrangements in place for setting
its objectives and monitoring delivery of actions and is in the
early stages of improving the way in which it evaluates the impact
of what it is doing
- The council is making good use of information and
communications technology in the provision of services and
delivering efficiencies.
- The council has been praised by the Welsh Language Board
for improvements in its services; for achieving the majority of its
targets contained within its Welsh Language Scheme.
Auditor General, Huw Vaughan Thomas, said: "We found that
effective financial management, good use of information technology
and strengths in people management were ensuring the council was
using most of its resources."
Council leader, Gordon Kemp said of the annual review and
inspection: "The report recognises the huge amount of work being
done and which will continue to be carried out in the Vale of
Glamorgan Council.
"I am pleased that the continuing progress we are making is
being recognised by the Wales Audit Office, because it reflects the
valuable contribution from all areas of the council.
"Improving the way we work and the services we deliver will
continue to be our key priorities."
